Fear can drive us to grasp for control, compromise our convictions, and make destructive choices. In Exodus 1:8–22, Pharaoh’s fear leads him from oppression to murder, while two seemingly powerless midwives show remarkable courage because they fear God more than the king. Their example reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear but choosing obedience to God even when it costs us something. Ultimately, Pharaoh’s failed schemes point forward to Jesus, whose cross appeared to be evil’s victory but became the means of salvation. Because Jesus reigns and gets the last word, we can trust Christ, fear God, and courageously obey Him.
Courage is fearing God more than everything else.
