Ephesians 4:2 – How To Glorify God In Secular Work /// Morning Fuel

How do we glorify God in secular work? How does a stay-at-home mom glorify God with her life? How does an accountant? A retired person? A truck driver?

To get a better idea of this, let’s look at one verse in Ephesians… In chapter 4:2, Paul tells us to walk in a manner worthy of the calling, “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.”

In other words, ACTIONS. Actions are what glorify God. It’s not the job that you have, but the actions that you do IN that job.

You can be in a totally secular job and still glorify God with your life. It doesn’t matter the job title. What matters is that you are acting in a way that glorifies God.

Paul mentions several of these… “humility, gentleness, patience.” This sounds very similar to the fruit of the spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23, which says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;”

As you become more like Jesus, these “fruits” will come out of your life more. And then as you live your life, no matter the work, you can glorify him as you live with humility, gentleness, patience, kindness, and so on.

So the “job title” is not what is most important! What is more important is acting out the fruit of the spirit in your life.

Dawson Trotman was the founder of a ministry called The Navigators. But Trotman became a Christian in his early 20s and was working as a truck driver at the time. So how does a truck driver glorify God?

He started out by learning scripture. Each day as he drove the truck, he would focus on learning one verse. One verse a day adds up! After three years he had learned over 1000 verses!

After that he began discipling other people on the weekends. He would teach them how to learn Scripture, apply it, and so on. Then he would send them out to do the same to others.

Dawson Trotman accomplished all of this while he worked as a truck driver!

Listen, no matter the job, you can still glorify him. Be intentional about living out the call he has put on your life. Live with kindness, humility, gentleness. If you will do this, you will glorify him!
