Verse 10 shows that an entire nation did not even know God. What can we learn from this passage to ensure that the same does not happen to our children? In this sermon, Pastor Kyle gives some things that we can do to help our kids know and love Jesus more. Will this ensure that they will grow up to love Jesus? No. But NOT doing these things will increase the odds of them not know God.
May what is said about Israel in verse 10 not be said of us!

Judges 1:1-2:5 – How To Fail Spiritually – Part 2 – Don’t Teach The Next Generation
Pastor Kyle Lewis
*** This sermon series was inspired by J.D. Greear’s sermon series with the same name. You can listen to his messages here.
Judges 2:7-8, 10 – 7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the Lord had done for Israel. 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110 years. … 10 And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.
Judges 2:11-13 – 11 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They abandoned the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.
Sadly, this happens today as well.

Parents, what can we do to give our kids the best chance to grow up and love God?
- Now I am not saying this will guarantee your kids become devout Christians. BUT, if you will wholeheartedly follow these things, the odds will be much higher.
- (Note: this is not an exhaustive list)
1) Know God Intimately Yourself.
2) Intentionally Teach Your Kids to Know and Love God.
- Ephesians 6:4 – “bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Teach them what?
1) Teach them to love church
- Attend regularly… not just every once in a while.
- Get to know others in the church.
- Serve in and through the church!
2) Teach them to apply their faith.
- Many of us have far more of Jesus in our heads than our hearts.
- You can only “teach” so much. At some point, you must get out there and practice your faith.
3) Teach them about the Bible and worship.
- Family Worship:
- Has been practiced by devout Christians for the past 2000 years.
- READ – read from the children’s Bible or a passage of Scripture
- For younger children, Pastor Kyle recommends The Big Picture Story Bible by David Helm.
- For older children, Pastor Kyle recommends The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name by Sally Lloyd-Jones.
- Around age 6-8, they are ready to hear the “real” Bible!
- SING – sing a biblically sound song (hymns are easy to sing as a family and full of great theology and biblical truth)
- PRAY – pray something regarding the passage you read and pray for the salvation and spiritual growth of your children
- MEMORIZE – work on memorizing Scripture or from a good catechism.
- Pastor Kyle likes The Truth and Grace Memory Book (2018 update) by Thomas Ascol. Book 1 is for ages 2 – 4th grade, Book 2 is for grades 5-8, and Book 3 is for grades 9-12. They can be found on christianbook.com.
- Recordings of Family Worship with Pastor Kyle’s family can be found on the Island Pond facebook page.
